My journey in the car business started long before I ever set foot on a lot. My grandfather was a Ford dealer in Winnsboro, SC, back in the 1970s. Following in his footsteps, my dad went through Ford’s sales training school, working at Ford dealerships across South Carolina before taking a leap of faith.

In 1985, with just $8,000 and a passion for the industry, he founded Godwin Motors. A natural-born salesman, he had an incredible ability to connect with people, making him successful enough to even take Saturdays off to go hunting.

I joined the family business full-time in the late ’90s while attending the University of South Carolina. In those early days, I bought cars and helped with sales while we followed the common practice of selling our notes every year or two to replenish cash flow. But in 2005, I suggested a shift—why not stop selling notes and start collecting payments ourselves? It wasn’t easy at first, but once we reached about 100 accounts, the benefits became clear. Growth followed, and soon, we needed to hire help—first for bookkeeping, then for collections.

By 2012, we had outgrown our original location. That year, we moved to the former Dick Smith lot and expanded with a full-service center. It was also the year I became part-owner. From there, the business evolved rapidly. We launched a car rental company, Related Finance Company (RFC), a warranty company, and a detail center. We began selling CPI, VSC, and VSI products while continuing to service both internal and customer-pay vehicles in our repair shop. To further scale operations, we started buying accounts from other local dealers, pushing our portfolio close to 1,000 accounts—all while maintaining zero debt and keeping our repo percentage below 12%.

I’ve done it all, seen it all, and heard it all. But at the end of the day, the only reason we are here is because of our customers. Their trust and loyalty are what drive us forward, and we, as BHPH owners, remain committed to providing reliable vehicles and top-notch service every step of the way.

Let us show you how YOU can drive your business forward with the same proven strategies that have fueled the success of Godwin Motors.
